Join Cleveland Democratic Socialists of America on Saturday, November 18 from 3:45-5:45 pm for our monthly reading group at the Martin Luther King Branch of the Cleveland Public Library, 1962 Stokes Blvd, Cleveland, OH 44106!
We will be discussing Solidarity Economies and alternatives to capitalism. We will begin with a presentation by members of the Cleveland DSA Education Committee on the ins the outs and the different forms Solidarity Economies can take. After that we will discuss the three readings:
- Gar Alperovitz, “The Question of Socialism (and Beyond!) Is About to Open Up in these United States.”
- Sam Gindin, “Chasing Utopias.” Jacobin, 3.10.2016
- Katie Gilbert, “The Socialist Experiment: A new-society vision for Jackson Mississippi.” Oxford American, Issue 98 (Fall, 2017)
The readings discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the Solidarity Economy idea, along with the example of Jackson, Mis, and its new radical mayor. Join us to discuss these readings and ideas for an alternative society not based on profit and exploitation.
