BACKGROUND

The current Trump regime and Ohio GOP have been continuously attacking trans rights in our city. The threat of police and vigilante violence targeting trans people, all marginalized people and Socialists continues to rise. Cleveland should be a safe haven for all despite ongoing, pointed legislation targeting the trans community. As Socialists, we understand that safety will never be guaranteed by the State, but by our community.

Cleveland DSA is committed to the rights of marginalized peoples, organizing the working class and building a Socialist movement in the United States. That includes our trans friends and neighbors. This includes YOU.

In October 2025, the City of Lakewood unanimously passed a groundbreaking Gender Freedom Policy, making a material difference in the lives of trans people by, among other things, preventing city resources from being used to detain or investigate persons solely for the reason of seeking or providing gender-affirming care. We won once, we can do it again with your help.

The policy also promises that city resources will not be wasted cooperating with or providing information to any individual, in- or out-of-state agency or department on gender-affirming mental or medical healthcare. (Read the full policy for an idea of the scope.)

We now seek to repeat this huge win in the City of Cleveland, where more than 60,000 individuals identify as LGBTQ+, a significant portion of them trans, non-binary or gender non-conforming. These comrades deserve robust protections from the attacks being made by the State of Ohio and the United States of America. We did it in Lakewood, we can do it again in Cleveland! But we need your help!
